MacBook Flaking May Be an Isolated Event

There’s been a lot of traffic around here recently due to my post about the flakey plastic coating on the new black MacBooks. It might’ve been something I rushed a little quickly into without checking for recurrent situations.

We received a shipment of the “BlackBooks” today, and fortunately (at least for Apple, and not so much for my reputation) the plastic coating, that I am assuming is the matte finish, did not flake off as it did at the Apple store. In fact, this may well have been the PERFECT MacBook. No flaking and… oh yeah NO WHINING. In addition, more accredited sources, like MacCentral.com reported that the units they received did not fall victim to any form of this “dandruff”, even after an intentional scratch test.

This leads me to believe that the flaking phenomenon that I witnessed was nothing more than a fluke, or maybe there are just different versions of the hardware out on the market–which wouldn’t surprise me at all. Or, perhaps there was just an even layer of finger goop left by customers during the day that decided to flake off…

If anyone else can confirm this, I would be much obliged.

Additionally, we performed a RAM install to upgrade the unit to 2gb. It is considerably easier to install than other models (from a consumer standpoint). No screwdriver required–just a plastic lever to release the original sticks with some heftier 1gb sticks. For a technician, though, I still prefer the traditional configuration and my trusy size 0 screwdriverThe hard drive should also be very easy to replace. These are both located in the battery compartment.

Hopefully, I didn’t cause too much damage, and instead just raised caution in potential customers.

Sincerely,
WinJerk

Update: Oops, I forgot. A screwdrive is required. And there is a whine, but it is ever so faint. Hardly noticeable unless you actively search for it.
