Don’t fear the AVI

Perian has arrived. The “Swiss Army Knife for Quicktime” indeed, it is the savior to all Mac users who accidentally (or intentionally) try to open those pesky .avi files with Quicktime, but only to find themselves assaulted by a nasty “buy these codecs!” error.

In addition to .avi files, Perian allows you to views the following natively in Quicktime:

• -Divx, XviD, FLV, AVI
• -MS-MPEG4 v1, MS-MPEG4 v2, MS-MPEG4 v3, DivX 3.11 alpha, 3ivX, Sorenson H.263, Flash Screen Video, Truemotion VP6
• -And these formats when they are inside an AVI:
  h.264, mpeg4, AAC, AC3 Audio, and VBR MP3.

As far as we’re concerned, this should be included standard in every installation of Quicktime.
