New iSight in Pipeline?

Wp-Content Uploads IsightApple has reportedly pulled it’s webcam offering from its online retail stores, as of Sunday December 17th. It can no longer be found anywhere in Apple’s online store, its prior location populated only be accessories. While there has been speculation that an iSight update is long overdue, Apple has made no formal announcement regarding the product’s current status. The iSight had been available only on a limited basis prior to this change.

Rumors have been swirling nonstop since the iSight went missing last night, with some arguing that a simple product refresh is in the works, and others expecting to see built-in iSights in Apple’s monitor offerings, thus making external iSights obsolete. It is also rumored that the new iSights will include a remote and an IR sensor, to be bundled with Apple’s Front Row software, but this remains pure speculation. If Apple were to bundle a remote, it would signal a shift in their strategy towards making a remote a standard accessory, which sounds plausible since Steve Jobs stated at WWDC that in Leopard (Mac OS 10.5), Front Row would be more tightly integrated into the OS. Time will tell, and we should know by Tuesday (the day Apple usually announces product updates) whether or not this is a mistake, a refresh, or a phase-out.
