New Apple.com Search

The Apple.com search used to suck so bad. Apple recently released an update to the look of their site, but they also did some big time upgrade to their integrated search, this is a demo of it. You can try it yourself at Apple.com

Do you need to defrag your Mac HD? The answer revealed!

bootcampFollowing my inability to get a straight answer on the question “Do I need to defrag my Mac?” I decided to find out for myself. I did a bit of research and there was certainly two sides to the argument. Armed with my iMac and a newly purchased copy of iDefrag 1.6.1, I set out to find out if it was useful or pointless to defrag my Mac.

A week of updates!

This has been a eventful past week in the world of Apple. There have been some exciting hardware and software releases:

MacBook ProTo start, the MacBook Pro’s got a bump in power and energy efficiency. The processors were upgraded to the new Santa Rosa line by Intel, the LCD display now sports an LED backlight, and the graphics card got a huge bump to the nVidia GeForce 8600 GT. According to Apple, these upgrades are roughly 50% faster than the original configuration of the MacBook Pro when they were released last year.

Parallels
As far as software goes, Parallels has announced that Parallels Desktop 3.0 will support DirectX OpenGL natively! This means running 3D Windows’ games in a virtualized environment in Mac OS. I, personally, cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of this to test and try out. CounterStrike, here I come!

OpenOfficeIn addition, OpenOffice now supports Aqua — it no longer requires X11 to run in the Mac OS. The new release supports both the PPC and Intel architectures. So, if you’re tired of running MS Office over Rosetta on your Intel-based Mac, here’s a quick and free solution!

User reviews and first impressions will follow soon! Stay tuned!

New MacBook Pro’s on The Horizon….or Not

macbookproWhile we had heard convincing reports that the MacBook Pro updates would have to wait until WWDC (June 11th), a few new reports have started trickling in that the MacBook Pro could see updates as soon as this Tuesday (June 5th). From past observations and my experience with Apple Education sales I would find altering a product release date for BTS(Back to School) promotions highly unlikely, if anything they would want to clear the inventory using the BTS special! Alas, time will tell!

Freeware Friday: Bean, Slick Cocoa Text Editor

beanBean is lean, fast, and uncluttered. If you get depressed at the thought of firing up MS Word or OpenOffice, try Bean. If you use Text Edit but have to jump through hoops just to get a word count or change the margins, try Bean. If you desire a simple, low-pressure writing environment, try Bean. Bean doesn’t do footnotes, customized headers and footers, columns, pre-defined text styles, floating graphics (but it does do in-line graphics). Best of all it will open all those text based formats and it’s completely free!
